Burapha University and “An Introductory Course on Art Therapy” Conference

Abstract

This paper describes the activities during the conference on "An Introductory Course on Art Therapy", March 17-21, 2006, which was initially planned by the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts and Faculty of Medicine, Burapha University, in collaboration with the Lantern of the East-Los Angeles, USA, and the Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health, but was eventually transferred the responsibility to the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University. The primary purpose of the conference is to distribute knowledge of art therapy for better known to the Thai practices. Experts of the field were invited from the USA as well as Thailand to orientate the audience. Highlights of the papers were from art therapists of New York University and Emporia State University. Attendants were from various disciplines, i.e., art educators, mental health personnels, artists, and social workers.  ในช่วงวันที่ ๑๗ - ๒๑ มีนาคม ๒๕๔๙ คณะศิลปกรรมศาสตร์ และคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยบูรพา ได้เข้าไปมีส่วนร่วมในการจัดการประชุมวิซาการกึ่งระดับชาติที่เป็นการประชุมวิซาการศิลปกรรมบำบัดเป็นครั้งแรกของประเทศไทย และได้ประสบความสำเร็จที่คาดไม่ถึง บทความนี้เป็นรายงานเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น ศิลปกรรมบำบัด (art therapy) เริ่มเพาะตัวขึ้นเมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๗ (ค.ศ. ๑๙๒๔) ๘๐ ปีเศษมาแล้วโดยจิตแพทย์โนแลน เอน.ดี.ซี. เลวิส แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยนิวยอร์ก ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ต่อมาจิตแพทย์มาร์กาเร็ต นอมบวร์ก ลูกศิษย์ของเลวิสได้สืบสานแนวคิด และเสนอชื่อกิจกรรมจิตบำบัดนี้ว่า 'art therapy' เมื่อ พ.ศ.๒๔๙๐ (ค.ศ.๑๙๕๗).ในประเทศไทย เท่าที่ทราบมีผู้นำแนวคิดดังกล่าว มาประยุกต์ประปราย ตั้งแต่ประมาณปี ๒๕๒๙ แต่ไม่มีการสนใจเป็นพิเศษจึงเป็นที่รู้จักกันในวงแคบ กระทั่งเกิดวินาศภัยจากคลื่นยักษ์ สึนามิที่ชายฝั่ง - จังหวัดภาคใต้ของประเทศไทยเมื่อวันที่ ๒๖ ธันวาคม ๒๕๔๗ และได้มีองค์กรต่างประเทศเข้ามาช่วยเหลือ ทำการบำบัดรักษาผู้ประสบภัยซึ่งเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการประชุมวิชาการ “แนะนำศิลปกรรมบำบัด” ครั้งนี้
