Abstract

          By the time students reach university, they should have had from school a solid grounding in English grammar and have built up a solid vocabulary to support it. This background knowledge, however, because of the limitations of chances and facilities in school, will be rather theoretical than practical. Whereas the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary may be extensive, because of the inexperience of teachers in school, the lack of time, and the lack of equipment, the experience the students have in actually using the language will be very small.
