ศิวราตรี : วันแห่งความรักของชาวเบงกอลตะวันตก

Abstract

ในคืนวันแรม 13 ค่ำ หรือ 14 ค่ำ เดือนผาลคุน อันตกอยู่ในราวเดือนกุมภาพันธ์หรือมีนาคม มีเทศกาลชื่อว่าศิวราตรี หรือมหาศิวราตรี ซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการอภิเษกสมรสของพระศิวะกับพระนางปารวตี เทพเจ้าที่นับถือกันมากที่สุดคู่หนึ่งในอินเดีย คืนนี้กล่าวกันว่าเป็นคืนที่พระศิวะร่ายรำท่ารำที่เรียกว่า ตาณฑพ ซึ่งหมายถึงการสร้างโลกในระยะเริ่มแรก การรักษาโลก และการทำลายล้างโลก ในวันนี้สตรีทั้งที่แต่งงานแล้วและยังไม่แต่งงานทั่วประเทศอินเดีย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในเบงกอลตะวันตก มักจะประกอบพิธีด้วยความจงรักภักดีและศรัทธาอย่างสูงด้วยการอดอาหารและถวายเครื่องสังเวยศิวลึงค์ พร้อมทั้งตั้งความปรารถนาให้ได้สามีที่ดี ความสุขในชีวิตสมรส และชีวิตสมรสอันยาวนานและอุดมสมบูรณ์ ประชาชนทั่วไป  ก็อดอาหารและท่องบ่นพระนามพระศิวะ โดยเชื่อว่าจะทำให้หลุดพ้นจากบาปทั้งปวงและเข้าถึงศิวโลกที่ประทับของพระศิวะ  On the thirteenth or fourteenth day of the waning moon in the month of Phalgun falls the festival of Shivaratri or Mahashivaratri, symbolising the wedding day of Shiva and Parvati, two of the most worshipped Gods in India. This auspicious festival comes sometime in February and March. This is the night when Shiva is said to have performed the Tandava or the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. Married women and unmarried girls all over India, especially in West Bengal, normally observe this occasion with great devotion and faith by fasting and making offerings to the Shiva Lingam, while wishing for good husbands, marital bliss and long prosperous nuptial lives. People also observe a strict fast and utter Shiva’s name with a belief to be freed from all sins and attain the world of Shiva.
